Mottephobia: Fear of Moths
Mottephobia: An abnormal and persistent fear of moths.
I have this fear and it’s the worst thing in the world.
Spring is here in Portland, and I’m starting to see moths gather around the light of my front door for the sole purpose of scaring the crap out of me. There are no screens on any of the windows in my house, so I often keep my windows closed at night, all lights off and a fan on me at high blast throughout the summer. Still, a moth will occasionally make its way into my bedroom and buzz around while I am trying to sleep, leaving me paralyzed and completely under my blanket in a desperate attempt to keep it off of me. Something that occasionally gets rid of them at this point is to open up the window wide and make my room completely dark. This only works if you a bright light outside – neighbors with outdoor lighting, streetlamps, etc. The moth will fly out of your room and to the light.
My incredibly stupid and inconvenient fear of moths seemed to surface around the time of my junior year of high school. There are a lot of bugs on the Jersey Shore, being so close to the ocean and mostly situated on swampland. I had a nightmare that involved moths getting under my blanket and crawling around all over me. I heard their buzzing vividly, and woke up entirely convinced it was real. Since then, I’ve somehow managed to become completely terrified of moths and I can’t be in a room where a moth currently resides. If I’m outside, I’m mostly fine. If I have a date over my house, she needs to deal with it for me. It can be a complicated thing to explain to those you share a bed with!
This year, I plan to purchase a huge quantity of mosquito netting/screen material and use a staple gun to put it up outside of the windows in the house. I am determined to somehow get past my ridiculous fears, but in the meantime I’m more concerned with simply coping.
I did some online research and found a few helpful hints on getting rid of all kinds of moths – outdoor moths, clothing moths and cabinet moths, otherwise known as “Indian Meal Moths.” I’d love to hear other suggestions… but most importantly, I’d love to hear how you’ve personally combatted your mottephobia because I’m starting to feel dehabilitated.
Getting rid of moths:
1. Moths often come in through open doors near outdoor lighting. Change the bulb in your porch light from a white bulb to a yellow one.
2. Cut up a pair of old pantyhose and make small sachets of bay leaves. Store your bay leaves on shelves where cabinet moths (Indian Meal Moths) hang out. You can also put bay leaves in your bags/jars that contain grains, flour, rice, etc. Moths, as well as other bugs, don’t go near bay leaves.
3. Get new screens, or make sure your current ones are secure.
4. Dust and vacuum regularly – moths love dust and won’t make a new home in your house if it’s not dusty enough for them to do so comfortably. Additionally, a vacuum with a hose is a great way to trap and kill a moth who managed to make it’s way inside.
5. Try moth traps that are not moth balls. Moth balls not only smell bad, but are extremely poisonous to humans as well as pets. Make sure not to use too many moth traps, however – too many moth traps will be sensory overload to the moths, and they will wind up ignoring all of them.
6. Cedar in the closet is great for preventing clothing moths. You can typically find cedar at local hardware stores. A combination of cedar chips and lavendar in sachets (make ‘em out of pantyhose!) placed strategically around your house will help keep them at bay.

Hi I also have a great fear of moths and people laugh at me but they don’t seem to understand that someone whos petrified of spiders (which i am not)well thats the same for me with moths i don’t know how it started but if theres one in the same room as me and is flying i scream and run out of the room in a hysterical mess and i won’t go back in until someone has killed it for me. I had one in my car the other day so i jumped out left my car to stall and shouted the nearest person to help me else i wouldn’t be able to get home well they found it funny but i couldn’t catch my breath all the way home. I don’t like the way they look or fly the’re brown and have fat bodies and dart bomb you i’m not scared of butterflies at all but i’m glad i’m not alone in my fear.

Wow, I am so glad I’m not the only one! Everyone makes fun of me for being afraid of moths. I am totally freaked out by the big hairy bodies *shudder* and how they fly around all crazy like. The worst is when they are landed and blend into the background and then jump out at you. Ok I have to stop talking about this…anyway, I use kitchen cleaner spray, the strongest I can get without bleach and I just stand as far away as possible, scream and squirt. That’s my last resort of course after I’ve called everyone on my cell phone and no one can come do it for me…

hi..
i’ve always been scared of moths, i go crazy when i see a big one. medium ones i can sort of deal with, like i keep it together. now i’m starting to hate butterflies too coz even though they have pretty colors and bla, i find them too similar to moths, which is becoming a problem. funny thing is that my best friend tells me she only sees moths when she’s with me… yesterday we went to a farm, and we were sitting in a house, when all of a sudden a huge black moth flew in and landed a few meters away from me… i couldn’t move or run out coz it was sitting right by the only door (there were no windows) so i was obviously going insane, i felt like crying and i was so scared it would fly and sit on me… it was huge! some guy got it to leave, and my best friend told me to research my fear and see if there’s like a way to overcome it! i’m just glad to know that it’s common enough to have a name

I’ve had a phobia of moths since I was a small kid. Sad to say it hasn’t got any better, to the point that today (I’m 21) I can’t handle butterflies and other flying insects…locusts, beetles, the lot! uggggggghhhh

I have been researching this for the past year or so myself. I am absolutely HORRIFIED of moths. My phobia is so bad I actually am brought to tears at the sight of them on videos. I am paralysed with fear in the late spring and early summer because moths are crazy around the area i live. I do not even go out at night during most of the summer and actually have panic attacks. I need to see a specialist about this because it is crippling my socially and emotionally. I am just glad to see that there are others out there that share this to some degree with me.

I share this fear of moths and am now researching it. I also do not like grasshoppers and crickets and some other buts, but I find myself most paralyzed in the presence of moths. I share all of the above sentiments.

I’ve been afraid of them since I was a child. I remember my dad took me camping, we opened up the tent and there had to be about 50 or so that flew out. I was 5 and haven’t been able to handle them since. I work in law enforcement and this is particularly embarrasing when I have to cuff someone up and am freaking out over a moth flying at me. This morning there was one flying in my car and I crashed my car into a speed limit sign, took out the sign and completely totaled my front end. Had to tell the cops it was a bumble bee so they wouldn’t take me off to the loony bin. I’m dreading my husband coming home to find the truck totaled and my explaining it was a moth that caused the crash. Does anyone know of any ways to cope with this. I’m only 22 yrs old and cant go on like this forever.

I’m terrified of moths too – well, to be honest, I don’t like any insects or spiders – but moths are what frighten me the most.
I hate the way they always seem to divebomb me and when they fly into things you hear a really faint ‘thud’. Ughhh. Just thinking about it is making my whole body itch.
I think I developed my fear when I was a lot younger – I remember my cousin and I found a dead butterfly under a hedge and she made me touch it. The feel of it’s wings was revolting – they were like really thin flower petals and they were dusty. Bleurghghgh.
To me, moths are even worse because they tend to SEEK ME OUT – at least butterflies leave me alone!
I can’t stay in the same room as a moth – even dead moths freak me out. Like others have said, it is a debilitating fear but people don’t seem to take it seriously (aside from fellow sufferers).
