Gay men, misogyny and the Fashion Industry?
I’m always looking to read opinion and theory on the negative influences of the fashion industry, and I haven’t seen much that I haven’t read before. Today I came across this really interesting theory about the influence of gay men on women’s bodies, and I started thinking about how this feeds the fire via the vehicle of the fashion industry:
This article brings up interesting points about misogyny from gay males based on a distaste for assigned female bodies. Now, keeping up with the stereotype of Lots Of Gay Dudes In The Fashion Industry, and as witnessed in fashion-centric reality television shows, are misogynistic gay men a contributor to the bad self-image of women in the fashion industry? Ever notice how much gay men in the media (like Perez Hilton, for example) trash the bodies of women, making comments on cellulite and big butts/guts? Where does this come from?
They say the perfect body for fashion is the body of a skinny young male-assigned person. The most “beautiful” and “palatable” models are the absurdly skinny and curveless ones you witness on the runways. These are the women that millions of young non-models try to emulate. If you were wondering where this originated, perhaps now you know….
Maybe I’m just saying this because I’m a man-hater, but I just think it’s important to explore all areas of this and not leave something out because it’s taboo.
